Western Kansas Supercells: May 25, 2017

Thursday’s storm chase in western Kansas featured quite a bit of structure. Although expectations were fairly low to start the day, it is late May and it’s hard to ignore a threat for severe thunderstorms in Kansas this time of the year.

The photo at the bottom of this post shows a striated supercell thunderstorm near Elkader, KS, which was tornado-warned at the time. Despite the tornado warning, I opted to stay south for photo opportunities of the storm, as any circulation would have surely been rain-wrapped.

After taking some photos, it was time to shift south to watch convection in southwestern Kansas. This convection struggled to organize very much, but a towering updraft did showoff a bit before the storm quickly weakened toward sunset.

The storm chase finished in Dodge City, perhaps fittingly, just one year and a day removed from a memorable tornado chase in the area.
